Toric Lens Options for Astigmatism

Correct Astigmatism During Cataract Surgery!

We offer a full range of advanced lens implants. During your consultation, Dr. Achiron will evaluate your lifestyle and vision goals to recommend the best technology for your eyes.

At Atlanta Vision Center, cataract surgery is not just about removing a cloudy lens—it’s about helping you see your best for years to come. That’s why Dr. Achiron offers a full range of advanced intraocular lenses (IOLs), including TECNIS® Odyssey™, TECNIS® Eyhance™, and toric lenses for astigmatism.

Whether you want to reduce your dependence on glasses or enjoy clearer vision at multiple distances, we’ll help you choose a lens that fits your lifestyle and goals.

What Is a Cataract Lens Implant?

During cataract surgery, the eye’s cloudy natural lens is gently removed and replaced with a clear artificial lens called an intraocular lens (IOL).

This new lens can be customized to:

  • Sharpen your distance vision
  • Improve intermediate (computer/arm’s-length) vision
  • Help with near tasks such as reading or using a smartphone
  • Correct astigmatism in many cases

At Atlanta Vision Center, we offer both standard and premium lens options.

Standard vs. Premium Lens Options

Standard Monofocal Lens

A standard monofocal lens is designed to provide clear vision at one distance, most commonly far away. Many patients still need glasses for intermediate and near tasks, such as computer work or reading.

Best for:
Patients who don’t mind wearing glasses after surgery and want the most basic option.

Premium Lens Options

TECNIS® Odyssey™ – Full-Range Vision

Premium Lens Options

TECNIS® Odyssey™ is an advanced presbyopia-correcting lens designed to provide sharp, high-quality vision at far, intermediate, and near distances. It is an excellent choice for patients who want more independence from glasses after cataract surgery.

Benefits of TECNIS® Odyssey™ may include:

  • Excellent distance vision for driving and outdoor activities
  • Strong intermediate vision for computer use and daily tasks
  • Functional near vision for reading, phone use, and hobbies
  • Smooth, continuous range of focus instead of “stepped” vision
  • Reduced glare and halos compared to some older multifocal designs

Best suited for:
Active patients who want to reduce or even eliminate their need for glasses for most daily activities.

Premium Lens Options

TECNIS® Odyssey™ Toric II – For Patients with Astigmatism

Premium Lens Options

If you have astigmatism, TECNIS® Odyssey™ is also available in a toric version: TECNIS® Odyssey™ Toric II.
This lens not only corrects your cataract and presbyopia, but also helps reduce or eliminate astigmatism, giving you clearer, more consistent vision.

Benefits of TECNIS® Odyssey™ Toric II:

  • Astigmatism correction during cataract surgery
  • Full-range vision (distance, intermediate, near)
  • Potentially less dependence on glasses or contact lenses
Premium Lens Options

TECNIS® Eyhance™ – Enhanced Monofocal Vision

TECNIS® Eyhance™ is an enhanced monofocal lens that takes the traditional single-focus lens a step further. It is engineered to provide excellent distance vision with improved intermediate vision compared to standard monofocal lenses.

Potential benefits of TECNIS® Eyhance™:

  • Crisp distance vision
  • Better intermediate vision for computer use and everyday tasks
  • Smooth, natural contrast sensitivity
  • Minimal glare or halos
  • A more “natural” visual experience compared to many multifocal options

Best suited for:
Patients who prioritize distance and intermediate vision and prefer a more subtle enhancement without committing to a full presbyopia-correcting lens.

Premium Lens Options

TECNIS® Eyhance™ Toric – Enhanced Vision for Astigmatism

For patients with astigmatism, TECNIS® Eyhance™ Toric combines enhanced monofocal performance with astigmatism correction.

Benefits include:

  • Sharp distance vision tailored to your prescription
  • Improved intermediate vision vs. a standard monofocal lens
  • Built-in astigmatism correction for clearer, more stable vision

Toric Lenses – Specifically for Astigmatism

Toric lenses are specially designed to correct corneal astigmatism at the time of cataract surgery.
If your cornea is more football-shaped than round, you likely have astigmatism. Without correcting it, your vision may remain blurry even after cataract removal.

By choosing a toric IOL, such as TECNIS® Odyssey™ Toric II or TECNIS® Eyhance™ Toric, many patients experience:

  • Sharper distance vision
  • Less dependence on glasses for distance
  • More predictable visual outcomes

Which Lens Is Right for Me?

There is no single “best” lens for everyone. The ideal option depends on:

  • Your eyeglass prescription and amount of astigmatism
  • Your hobbies and daily visual demands
  • How important it is for you to reduce your dependence on glasses
  • Any other eye conditions you may have

During your cataract evaluation, Dr. Achiron will:

  • Perform a detailed exam and measurements
  • Review your lifestyle, work, and visual goals
  • Explain the pros and cons of each lens option
  • Recommend a customized plan for your surgery

FAQs

Will I ever need glasses again with a premium lens?

Many patients significantly reduce their dependence on glasses, but no lens can guarantee complete independence in all situations. You may still prefer glasses for certain tasks.

Are premium lenses covered by insurance?

Basic cataract surgery is typically covered, but premium lens upgrades often involve an out-of-pocket investment. Our team will review your benefits and provide a clear estimate.

How do I know if I’m a candidate for a toric lens?

If you have astigmatism, a toric IOL may be an excellent option. Dr. Achiron will confirm this with detailed measurements during your exam.
