One of the most common questions patients ask before laser vision correction is what recovery will actually feel like. PRK has an outstanding safety record and delivers vision results comparable to LASIK, but because it works on the surface of the cornea, the healing timeline is a little different. Knowing what to expect at each stage can ease anxiety and help you plan your time off with confidence.

The First 24 Hours

Immediately after PRK, your surgeon places a soft bandage contact lens over the eye to protect the healing surface. Numbing drops will wear off within a few hours, and you may experience mild discomfort, light sensitivity, watering, or a gritty sensation. Your vision will be blurry. The best thing you can do is rest with your eyes closed, use any prescribed drops, and avoid screens. Be sure to arrange a ride home, as you will not be able to drive.

Days Two Through Five

This is the most active phase of healing, when the epithelium regenerates across the surface of the cornea. Discomfort typically peaks in the first couple of days and then steadily eases. Vision often fluctuates during this window, which is completely normal. Once your surgeon confirms the surface has healed, usually around day three to five, the bandage contact lens is removed during a follow-up visit.

Weeks One Through Four

Most patients are comfortable returning to work within a week, though those with visually demanding jobs may want a few extra days. Vision continues to sharpen noticeably during this period. You will likely still be using lubricating and anti-inflammatory drops, and it is important to protect your eyes from bright sunlight with quality UV-blocking sunglasses.

One to Three Months and Beyond

Vision continues to refine and stabilize over the following months as the cornea fully settles into its new shape. Many patients reach their sharpest, most stable vision within this window. Attending all scheduled follow-up appointments allows your care team to monitor progress and ensure the best possible outcome.

Tips for a Smooth Recovery

Follow your drop schedule exactly, avoid rubbing your eyes, stay out of pools and hot tubs until cleared, and keep your follow-up appointments. Managing dryness is a normal part of healing, and our team can recommend solutions through our dry eye treatment services if needed.
