If you’re planning cataract surgery, you may have heard about TECNIS® Odyssey™ and TECNIS® Eyhance™ lenses. Both are advanced lens options offered at Atlanta Vision Center, but they are designed for slightly different visual goals.
Here’s a simple side-by-side comparison to help you understand the difference—and how Dr. Achiron helps patients decide.
What Is TECNIS® Odyssey™?
TECNIS® Odyssey™ is a presbyopia-correcting lens that aims to give you a full range of vision:
- Distance: driving, TV, seeing faces across the room
- Intermediate: computer, cooking, working at arm’s length
- Near: reading, phone use, close-up hobbies
Many patients choose Odyssey when they want the highest level of independence from glasses for most daily activities.
Key advantages:
- Designed for continuous, full-range vision
- Reduced dependency on reading glasses
- Available in a toric version (Odyssey Toric II) for patients with astigmatism
What Is TECNIS® Eyhance™?
TECNIS® Eyhance™ is considered an “enhanced monofocal” lens. It still functions like a monofocal lens, but it’s engineered to offer sharper distance vision and improved intermediate vision compared to a standard monofocal.
It does not aim to provide as much near vision as a presbyopia-correcting lens like Odyssey, but many patients appreciate:
- Natural, high-quality distance vision
- Better mid-range performance (e.g., computer, dashboards, countertops)
- Minimal glare and halos for many patients
Eyhance is also available in a toric version for patients with astigmatism.
Odyssey vs. Eyhance: How Do They Compare?
1. Range of Vision
- Odyssey:
Best choice if you want the widest range of vision (distance, intermediate, and some near) and hope to limit your need for glasses. - Eyhance:
Best choice if you want excellent distance vision plus a helpful boost at intermediate distances, but don’t need a full multifocal-like range.
2. Dependence on Glasses
- Odyssey:
Many patients use glasses less often, especially for intermediate and near tasks—though some may still choose readers for very fine print. - Eyhance:
Many patients still need reading glasses for small print, but may feel less reliant on glasses for things at arm’s length.
3. Visual Experience
- Odyssey:
A presbyopia-correcting design; some patients may notice more visual phenomena, though it is designed to reduce glare and halos compared with older multifocal lenses. - Eyhance:
Feels more like a traditional monofocal lens with an “upgrade,” and often appeals to patients who want a more “subtle” enhancement.
4. Astigmatism Correction
Both lenses are available in toric versions to correct astigmatism:
- TECNIS® Odyssey™ Toric II
- TECNIS® Eyhance™ Toric
If you have astigmatism, toric options can be a key part of your surgical plan.
Which Lens Should You Choose?
Here are some general guidelines:
- You might lean toward Odyssey if:
- You want the most freedom possible from glasses
- You’re comfortable investing in a premium, presbyopia-correcting lens
- You’re active and rely on your vision for many tasks at different distances
- You might lean toward Eyhance if:
- You want a step up from a standard monofocal lens
- You prioritize distance and intermediate vision
- You prefer a more subtle, “natural” visual experience
