Can diabetic retinopathy be reversed?

In its early stages, progression can often be slowed or stabilized with consistent blood sugar control and regular monitoring. As the condition advances, treatments such as laser photocoagulation and vitrectomy are used to prevent further vascular changes and help preserve vision. In the broader field, anti-VEGF injections are a recognized treatment approach that can slow, and in some cases help reverse, diabetic retinopathy, though the right approach depends on each patient's specific diagnosis and should be discussed directly with your eye doctor.

How often should diabetics get eye exams?

People with Type 2 diabetes should be screened at the time of diagnosis and then at least once a year afterward. More broadly, an annual dilated eye exam is recommended for everyone living with diabetes, and more frequent visits may be needed if diabetic retinopathy has already been diagnosed.

Does diabetic retinopathy always cause vision loss?

Not necessarily. Diabetic retinopathy often causes no noticeable symptoms in its early stages, and when it's caught through routine screening, treatment can often help preserve vision before significant loss occurs.

Is the fluorescein angiography test painful?

Fluorescein angiography involves injecting a fluorescent dye into a vein so detailed images of the retinal blood vessels can be captured. Most patients describe the injection itself as a brief pinch, similar to a routine blood draw, rather than something significantly painful.

Can diabetic retinopathy be prevented?

While diabetic retinopathy can't always be entirely prevented, managing key risk factors such as blood sugar, blood pressure, cholesterol, and smoking can significantly reduce your chances of developing it or slow its progression, especially when combined with regular screening.

Does insurance cover eyelid surgery?

Insurance can cover upper eyelid surgery when documentation shows the eyelid skin or tissue is obstructing your vision, typically demonstrated through a visual field test performed before and after the eyelid skin is taped up, along with supporting photographs. Coverage is evaluated case by case, and no insurer guarantees approval in advance. Lower eyelid surgery is rarely covered because it does not typically block vision. Atlanta Vision Laser And Cataract Center accepts most major insurance providers and can help you understand your specific plan's requirements before scheduling.

What is the difference between dermatochalasis and ptosis?

Dermatochalasis refers to excess, loose skin on the upper eyelid that has lost elasticity over time, sometimes hanging low enough to rest on the eyelashes. Ptosis refers to an actual drooping of the eyelid tissue itself, caused by weakened muscles or tendons, which lowers the eyelid's resting position. The two conditions can occur separately or together, and both can reduce the upper visual field enough to be considered medically significant rather than purely cosmetic.

How much does eyelid surgery cost?

Blepharoplasty in the United States typically ranges from about $2,000 to $7,000, averaging around $4,000, depending on whether one or both eyelids are treated and whether the case is medical, cosmetic, or combined. Because it is generally performed as an outpatient procedure, some of the costs associated with a surgical suite are limited. When a case qualifies as medically necessary, insurance may cover a significant portion of the cost; purely cosmetic work is typically the patient's responsibility.

What is the difference between upper and lower blepharoplasty?

Upper blepharoplasty treats sagging skin, fat deposits, and weakened muscles along the upper eyelid, and is the procedure most often evaluated for medical necessity because it can obstruct the visual field. Lower blepharoplasty corrects lower eyelid drooping and dark circles beneath the eyes, and is generally considered a cosmetic procedure since it does not typically interfere with vision. Many patients choose to have both performed together, with insurance, if applicable, applying only to the upper eyelid portion.

How do I know if my eyelid surgery would be considered medically necessary?

Signs worth having evaluated include eyelid skin that visibly rests on your eyelashes, frequently raising your eyebrows throughout the day to see clearly, brow strain or headaches from that compensation, and noticeable difficulty reading or driving, particularly at night, that is not explained by your general eyesight. A clinical evaluation, including visual field testing before and after taping the eyelid skin, is the only reliable way to confirm medical necessity. Our doctors can perform that evaluation and explain, honestly, which category your case is likely to fall into.

At what age does presbyopia usually start?

Presbyopia typically becomes noticeable in the early-to-mid 40s, though the exact timing varies from person to person. It develops gradually rather than appearing overnight, so many people first notice it as needing to hold a phone or menu farther away, or needing brighter light to read comfortably. Because it results from a natural stiffening of the eye's lens, presbyopia continues to progress gradually until it generally stabilizes in the mid-60s.

Can presbyopia be prevented?

No, presbyopia cannot currently be prevented because it results from an age-related change in the flexibility of the eye's natural lens, a process that eventually affects nearly everyone. It is not caused by lifestyle factors like screen time or reading habits, so there is no proven way to delay its onset. The available approach is managing it effectively once it develops, through options such as reading glasses, prescription eye drops, or surgical procedures like monovision LASIK or refractive lens exchange.

Do Qlosi eye drops have side effects?

As with any prescription medication, Qlosi eye drops can cause side effects in some patients, and it is important to discuss your full medical and eye health history with an eye doctor before starting them. Because Qlosi works by temporarily constricting the pupil, patients should have a comprehensive eye exam to confirm it is an appropriate option for their eyes. An eye doctor at Atlanta Vision Laser And Cataract Center can review potential side effects in detail based on each patient's individual health profile.

Is monovision LASIK permanent?

Monovision LASIK reshapes the cornea, so the distance and near-vision correction it creates is intended to be a long-term, permanent change, unlike reversible options such as eye drops. That said, presbyopia itself continues to progress with age even after the procedure, and further changes in the eyes over time, including the eventual development of cataracts, are still possible. Patients considering monovision LASIK should discuss long-term expectations with Dr. David O'Day during a consultation to understand how the procedure fits into their broader eye health over time.

Is Refractive Lens Exchange the same as cataract surgery?

Refractive Lens Exchange and cataract surgery use very similar techniques and the same types of intraocular lenses, such as TECNIS® and AcrySof® lenses, but they are performed for different reasons. Cataract surgery removes a lens that has already become clouded, while RLE proactively replaces a natural lens that is still clear but no longer focusing well due to presbyopia, before a cataract has fully developed. Because the natural lens is removed in both procedures, a patient who has RLE will not go on to develop a cataract in that eye later in life.

Is refractive lens exchange more expensive than LASIK?

Pricing for both procedures depends on individual factors such as the lens technology chosen for RLE or the specific laser technique used for LASIK, as well as the number of eyes treated. Because RLE involves lens replacement and premium IOL options like TECNIS® and AcrySof® multifocal or extended-range lenses, it is generally a more involved procedure than LASIK. The most accurate way to understand cost differences for your specific situation is to schedule a consultation, where pricing can be discussed based on your exam results and treatment plan.

Is there an age cutoff for LASIK or RLE?

There isn't a strict universal age cutoff for either procedure, but there are strong general guidelines. RLE works best for patients over 40, particularly because the risk of retinal detachment is higher for patients under 50, especially those with extreme nearsightedness. LASIK tends to be better suited to younger patients with stable, moderate prescriptions and healthy corneas. Age is one of several factors, alongside prescription strength and eye health, that a comprehensive exam will assess.

How does recovery time compare between RLE and LASIK?

LASIK recovery is typically quick, with many patients noticing improved vision within a day or two and resuming most normal activities shortly afterward. RLE recovery takes longer overall, with full healing taking up to eight weeks, although most patients return to normal daily activities within days to a couple of weeks. Both procedures come with specific instructions on driving, exercise, and swimming timelines, provided by your surgeon.

Can I have both LASIK and refractive lens exchange?

It's possible for some patients to have LASIK earlier in life and later become candidates for RLE as they age, particularly if presbyopia or cataracts develop. Whether this sequence makes sense for a specific patient depends on their individual eye health history and current vision needs, which is why a personalized evaluation is necessary rather than a general answer.

Which procedure lasts longer, RLE or LASIK?

RLE involves replacing the eye's natural lens with an artificial IOL, which does not develop cataracts the way a natural lens can, since the natural lens has been removed. LASIK reshapes the cornea, and while its correction is generally stable, the eye's natural lens remains in place and can still develop age-related changes, including cataracts, later in life. This is one reason some LASIK patients consider RLE or cataract surgery years afterward.

Is there an age limit for LASIK?

The minimum age for LASIK is generally 18, since vision needs to be fully stable before surgery. There's no strict maximum age, but as patients get older, conditions like presbyopia or early cataracts can shift the conversation toward other options, which is something your doctor will evaluate during your exam.

Can I get LASIK if I have dry eyes?

Significant dry eye disease can affect LASIK candidacy because the procedure can temporarily increase dryness during healing. In many cases, dry eye can be treated and better managed first, after which candidacy can be reassessed. A comprehensive exam is the only way to know where you personally stand.

What if my corneas are too thin for LASIK?

If your corneas don't have enough thickness for LASIK to be performed safely, you're not necessarily out of options. PRK is a related laser procedure that works on the surface of the cornea rather than requiring a corneal flap, and it's often considered for patients who don't qualify for LASIK due to thickness alone.

Can I have LASIK if I'm pregnant or nursing?

Pregnancy and nursing are generally reasons to delay LASIK rather than permanent disqualifiers. Hormonal changes during these periods can affect vision and healing, so most doctors recommend waiting until afterward and until your prescription has stabilized again before pursuing surgery.

What happens during the evaluation to determine if I'm a candidate?

A comprehensive LASIK evaluation typically includes measuring your prescription, checking corneal thickness and shape, evaluating your tear film for dryness, and reviewing your overall eye and medical history. This full picture is what allows your doctor to confirm candidacy with confidence, rather than relying on prescription numbers alone.
