How Long Will LASIK Vision Correction Last? Submitted by Atlanta Vision Cataract and Laser Center on October 20, 2016

LASIK is a great procedure for obtaining clear vision for those people who qualify. Dr. Leonard Achiron at Atlanta Vision Cataract & Laser Center Center explains that the procedure should last a lifetime. Eyesight from LASIK becomes stable in individuals in about 6 months to a year. The clarity for long distance vision patients have after stabilization should remain consistent throughout their lives.

However, once people reach their 40’s, eyesight in just about everyone begins to change. It’s a natural aging process that eyes under go. These vision changes usually affect the up close vision making it difficult to read. The condition is called presbyopia and happens to everyone. Even while this change in vision occurs, the way people see distances should remain the same including those who have had LASIK surgery as long as the eye stays healthy.

Again, as you age there are predictable changes to the eyes. Just as our physical strength decreases with age, our eyes also exhibit an age-related decline in performance. These occur in just about everyone starting in their 60’s and beyond. Cataracts can be considered an age-related disease and are extremely common among seniors and can be readily corrected with cataract surgery.

Some of us, however, will experience more serious age-related eye diseases that have greater potential for affecting our quality of life as we grow older. These conditions include glaucoma, macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy. Even so, the corrections people have had with LASIK do not have anything to do with how vision has changed with age.
