Cloudy Vision? Maybe It’s Cataracts Submitted by Atlanta Vision Cataract and Laser Center on October 14, 2016
Developing cataracts is probable after you’ve reached a certain age. They usually occur in your late 60’s and 70’s and considered a normal part of the aging process. A cataract is a clouding of the lens in the eye that affects vision. Cataracts can cause blurry vision and increase the glare from lights. If a cataract makes it difficult for you to carry out your normal activities, Dr. Leonard Achiron at Atlanta Vision Center may suggest cataract surgery to remove the lens of your eye and, in most cases, replace it with an artificial lens called an Intraocular Lens (IOL) The cataract surgery is performed by an ophthalmologist Dr. David O’Day on an outpatient basis.
In modern cataract surgery, there is a choice in intraocular lens implants. The traditional or standard lens implant is generally covered by all insurance companies including Medicare patients. This implant is designed to give a patient good distance vision or near in those patients that do not have significant astigmatism.
There are several intraocular lens implants that are able to give a patient near and far corrected vision without glasses. The additional cost of premium lens implants are typically not covered by insurance companies or Medicare.
When considering cataract surgery, keep these questions in mind:
- Do you see glares or halos when driving at night?
- Can you see to safely do your job and to drive?
- Do you have problems reading or watching television?
- Do vision problems affect your level of independence?
- Do you have difficulty seeing faces clearly?
Cataract surgery is a very safe surgical procedure. According to the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS), 3 million Americans undergo cataract surgery each year, with an overall success rate of 98 percent or higher. Complications after cataract surgery are very uncommon, and most can be treated successfully.
Atlanta Vision Center recommends patients to be properly screened for other eye conditions prior to scheduling cataract surgery to reduce the risk of complications. It may be beneficial to treat other eye problems before proceeding with cataract surgery. Atlanta Vision Center has performed thousands of cataract procedures and has patients coming from all over including Roswell, Stockbridge, McDonough, Locust Grove, Union City, Decatur, and Marietta.
