Are People Over 40 Too Old for LASIK Vision Correction? Submitted by Atlanta Vision Cataract and Laser Center on October 20, 2016

Definitely not! At Atlanta Vision Cataract & Laser Center Center we treat many patients with LASIK surgery who are 40 and well above. We’ve treated patients with otherwise healthy eyes and no signs of cataracts who were in their 60’s. With today’s advanced technology and our affordable prices, LASIK is within the reach of just about anyone.

During your 40’s most people develop presbyopia, a condition where your near vision begins to change and it becomes hard to read small print. Reading glasses usually are needed. You can’t escape presbyopia, even if you’ve never had a vision problem before. Even people who are nearsighted will notice that their near vision blurs when they wear their usual eyeglasses or contact lenses to correct distance vision. Unfortunately, this condition worsens as you age up to around 65. However, it’s really not a need for concern as you can just get stronger reading glasses. Presbyopia is just a natural condition that occurs in everyone’s eyes.

There are a couple of options for those over 40:

For many the LASIK procedure (Laser In-Situ Keratomileusis) can correct far sighted patients. To find out if this would be a good option for you, an eye exam from the LASIK specialists at Atlanta Vision Cataract & Laser Center Center would be your first step.

Another option is monovision. Many baby boomers are increasingly opting for this procedure that compensates for near vision, or presbyopia. In this procedure, LASIK is performed on one eye to correct distant vision and the other eye is corrected for near vision. Dr. Achiron or Dr. O’Day can discuss the pros and cons of this type of vision correction to help you decide if this procedure would meet your vision goals.

Everyone’s eyes are constantly aging and changing and may influence a person’s candidacy for being a LASIK candidate. If you are over 40, 50 or even 60 and in good health, have a stable prescription and are considering LASIK, then find out if it’s a solution to your vision problem. Schedule an appointment with Dr. Leonard Achiron at the Atlanta location or Dr. Bart O’Day at the Dahlonega location. We find a lot more of our patients can have LASIK than those who can’t.
